More Snow

Snowstorms can be a challenge, but the next day is often so beautiful. Here are a few images from my neighborhood in NH, and from the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, MA.

Icy River

Every day the view outside my studio windows changes. The river rises and falls, foliage comes and goes, some days are foggy, some are clear. This morning, after a frigid night, the river is flowing around ice formations covered with snow, and a flock of ducks who decided to forego a trip south frolics in the water and rests on the ice. Very cold weather is predicted for the next few days, so it will be interesting to see how the scene changes as the river solidifies.

New Year

We started the year with a temperature of about -4 degrees F. The numbing wind made it feel considerably colder. Even without the thermometer, we can tell that it's cold by looking at the Rhododendron bush. On a frigid day the leaves curl up and point to the ground, making the bush look like it wants to withdraw back into the earth until springtime.

I am determined to go outside to photograph, even on days when the weather is uncomfortable. Maybe I'll start that tomorrow.

Ice Storm 12/12/08

Despite all the inconveniences, the ice storm provided some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. The ice casts of Rhododendron leaves were quite a sight, and I couldn't resist photographing the red berries, even though they must be the most photographed subject of every ice storm.

Tom Rush

Last evening we had the opportunity to attend a concert by Tom Rush, one of our long time favorite folk singers. Tom played at the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH. These photos were captured without flash, in rather dim light.

Chocorua Lake

On Thanksgiving we drive to northern NH to visit with relatives. This year, we stopped along the way to have a look at Mt. Chocorua. The area already had a substantial snowfall, and the lake was mostly ice covered. The edge of the ice had formed, or broken, to look like gigantic crystals, which were as interesting as the beautiful mountains.
